Lunch and a hike.

Image
I have no intention of making this a food blog, but finding places to eat is a large part of  traveling. Today we found The Main Street Station  where I had eggs benedict - unusual diner fare. The hand cut onion rings surpassed my high standards with ease.  It is a refreshing take on diners with an emphasis on early 20th century decor and music. Though it is expanded from the original diner car the curved ceilings over seating  and passageways continue the dining car feel. The original irreparable reefer is now used for dry storage, and the larger kitchen and dining areas have extended into a former church that burned down.  Plymouth, New Hampshire  has a vibrant historic downtown that includes a bandstand and fountains.   One fountain includes this statue of a Boy Scout. In warmer seasons his cupped hands overflow with water over a boulder into a pool for animals. Two other fountains are one either side of this statue. ...

Breakfast and a hike.

We stopped at Benton's Sugar Shack today. Syrup grade gauge? Had magnificent breakfasts that included maple baked beans and maple cooked kielbasa. These items were the source of a couple arguments as we swapped some of our portions, despite leaving with a doggie bag!  They also host the White Mountain Boogie N' Blues Festival . I was fortunate enough to hear one owner recount their legal battle with Bev (from the above sign) to continue this event, culminating in a town vote where 85% of the town voted to support it. It was the highest attended vote in this town! Pictures of the Blues Brothers, John Lee Hooker, and the Uppity Blues Women adorn this room. Touring the evaporator bolstered my belief that the process was at least in part invented as a way to keep warm when the sap runs. A body has to be prepared for the seasonal changes. The season maples run is what I call the thaw. We are in the lake areas of New Hampshire, I imagine the M/S Moun...

More Spring.

I have little to say. Perhaps I'm over-thinking  things. I'll be traveling a little soon, perhaps that will get the fingers typing.

SPRING 2015

Something 'bout a Mercury

Image
Spring in New England is best noted by the return of motorcycles and sports cars on frosted heaved roads.. Viewed across the parking expanse I assumed this was another t-bucket repro.  The offy proved me wrong. This  was a classic.  Badging stated it reached 123.28 MPH in Oct. 1947 on Bonneville Salt Flats as measured by the Southern California Timing Association. The owner said that this Mercury reached 130 since he put the new supercharger on it.  The LA Gopher club is said to have been established in 1936, and was associated with SCTA. This is no pristine museum piece. Flaws and nicks are abundant. Daily drivers are like that, and their owners have more fun than those that keep their vehicles under glass. Every nick and ding a driver puts on a car like this becomes a memory and another badge of honor.

I will always take you outside to jump in puddles. And when you fall and ask for mommy I will find her. Gampa.
